Business and Life Lessons from Willy Wonka

By Jo Beth Bootz September 26, 2016

With the recent passing of Gene Wilder, all thoughts have gone to that magical, golden ticket and unique factory of our imaginations.  Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was a staple of my childhood and a current family favorite with my children.  Gene Wilder’s eccentric performance was brilliant, inspiring and even terrifying at moments.

While we all wanted to try that everlasting gobstopper and scrumdiddlyumptious bar, there were far greater treasures buried in the movie; treasures that can mold our everyday business life. Willy Wonka dished out some fantastic advice around every corner, advice that I have started to apply in my professional life.

Mr. Wonka was a brilliant and creative man when it came to business and his quotes from the movie proved it.

“No other factory in the world mixes its chocolate by waterfall.”

Business Tip: Be Unique.

Willy Wonka understood the beauty that is doing something no one else has ever done. What is your waterfall?

“Next time, try to open your mouth a little wider when you speak.”

Business Tip: Communication is key.

Make your voice heard. It’s important to communicate effectively and professionally whether at a meeting, on the phone, through email or even social media.

“There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you’ll be free if you truly wish to be.”

Business Tip: Creativity and imagination should never be undervalued.

Don’t forget to use your imagination and believe extraordinary things are possible.

“If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it. Want to change the world? There’s nothing to it.”

Business Tip: The world is yours to make a difference.

See a problem?  Change it.  Want to try something new?  Do it.  You are in control of your destiny.

“Don’t forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he’d ever wished for … He lived happily ever after.”

Business Tip: Be happy.

My daughter always says she just wants to live happily ever after.  Is that your goal?  What are you doing to make your happily ever after a reality?

“So shines a good deed in a weary world.”

Business Tip: Do good in the world and spread it like wildfire.

Never forget that you can change the world for the better with a kind spirit and good deeds toward others.
