Be Your Brand

By Amy Peloso, The Queen Bee NYC: Certified Life & Career Coach October 26, 2015

Do you get nervous when you hear, “you are what you sell,” or “people buy from people they like”?

The only reason to feel like that is if you’re lacking clarity.   Because when you’re crystal clear about who you are and what you do, you have confidence.  And that leads to sales.

It all starts with personal branding.  Consider it the foundation of your business.  Much like a house, if you don’t put a foundation in place, whatever you build won’t stand for long.

From the colors of your website and the words in your blog to the way you interact with people and the shoes on your feet – there are many factors make up your personal brand.

We’re surrounded by sights, sounds, smells and other sensory information that gets processed - consciously and unconsciously.  And we form impressions based on those perceptions.

Creating a personal brand is creating an impression of you/your business.  And the good news is we have some control over what others take in by what we put out.

Let this awareness settle into your mind and start noticing everything around you - people, places, businesses and things – and how they make you feel.

What specifically about them is contributing to that overall perception?  (Video on website, look on face, flowers on table, company car, shape of business card, store layout, etcetera.)

Now turn it around.  How do those impressions make you think about the message you’re sending out?  How do you want people to feel when they encounter you/your business?  What are some things you can do to create your intended impressions?

This “work” should be enjoyable.  If it’s not, you’re likely putting unnecessary pressure on yourself.  If that’s the case, please remember to:

·    Be yourself: Your only job in this life is to know who you are and be that person.

·    Go with the flow: Personal branding is a process.  And it’s ever-evolving - just like you.  This will not happen overnight and that’s okay.

·    Stop comparing: Since you’re the only one of you around, nobody can do you like you do you.  (That’s a good thing.)  Don’t try to conform.  Know your differentiators and use them to stand out. This will eliminate the existence of “competition”.

·    Think Abundantly: There’s more than enough - clients, business, money, etc. - to go around.  Seriously.  Believe it.

My hope is that while you understand how important building a solid brand is for your business, you’ll feel at ease doing that.

There’s only one you - and we need your presence in this world - so have fun showing the world who that is!
